Orlando Pizzolato (Thiene, 30 luglio 1958) maratoneta , due volte vincitore della Maratona di New York (1984 e 1985) ed argento ai Campionati europei di atletica leggera 1986.Oltre alle due vittorie alla maratona di New York, salì sul gradino più alto del podio anche alle Universiadi del 1985 svoltesi a Kobe e primeggiò alla maratona di Venezia del 1988. Mentre il 2º posto agli Europei di Stoccarda 1986, alle spalle dell'altro maratoneta italiano Gelindo Bordin. Ai Campionati del mondo del 1987 di Roma Pizzolato giunse settimo mentre la maratona delle Olimpiadi di Seul, dell'anno successivo, la concluse in sedicesima posizione.

Edouard Louis Joseph Merckx, detto Eddy (Meensel-Kiezegem - Belgio, 17 giugno 1945), Soprannominato il "Cannibale" per la sua voglia di vincere sempre e di non lasciare nulla agli avversari,è considerato da molti il più forte ciclista di tutti i tempi e il miglior sportivo belga di sempre.
Si aggiudicò cinque Tour de France e cinque Giri d'Italia, più una Vuelta a España nel 1973. Fece suoi inoltre tre Campionati del mondo su strada, sette Milano-Sanremo (record), due Giri delle Fiandre, tre Gand-Wevelgem (record), tre Parigi-Roubaix, due Amstel Gold Race, tre Freccia Vallone (record), cinque Liegi-Bastogne-Liegi (record) e due Giri di Lombardia.[3] Fu inoltre primatista dell'ora, con 49,432 km, per dodici anni, dal 1972 al 1984, mentre su pista vinse diciassette Sei giorni.
È uno dei cinque ciclisti ad aver conquistato i tre grandi Giri, e l'unico ad essere riuscito a realizzare l'accoppiata Giro-Tour per tre volte (1970, 1972 e 1974). Nel 1974, inoltre, riuscì a vincere, nello stesso anno, Giro d'Italia, Tour de France e Campionato mondiale su strada: soltanto l'irlandese Stephen Roche, nel 1987, riuscì ad eguagliarlo. Al Tour detiene il record di tappe vinte in totale (34)e in una sola edizione (8), e il maggior numero di maglie gialle (111);al Giro vinse invece 25 tappe e indosso'la maglia rosa per 77 volte,un record.
Oltre a vincere le gare su strada, Merckx vinceva anche d'inverno quando correva nei velodromi. Sono 98 le sue vittorie su pista, tra queste i titoli di campione europeo e campione nazionale di varie specialità e 17 Sei Giorni (le più importanti, Grenoble, Milano, Monaco, Berlino, Zurigo, Gand).
Non solo i risultati danno a Merckx la definizione di ciclista più grande di tutti i tempi, ma anche le sue straordinarie doti di atleta completo e fortissimo su tutti i terreni. Il belga ha vinto molte corse per distacco, ha battuto allo sprint i migliori velocisti della sua epoca, in montagna ha trovato soltanto avversari occasionali e sulle grandi salite ha costruito le più prestigiose vittorie, è stato anche un ottimo discesista, un formidabile cronoman ed un passista d'eccezione. I giornalisti del tempo scrissero che per Merckx avevano esaurito gli aggettivi superlativi.
La sua condotta di gara improntata sullo spettacolo e sulla generosità : la presenza di Merckx era sinonimo di corsa d'assalto, di corsa in testa (da cui il titolo La course en tete di un film biografico sul campione). Tutto questo comportava che Merckx oltre alle numerose vittorie risultava altrettanto spesso piazzato tra i primissimi nelle gare che non riusciva a vincere.
