Il Team Hoyt è un team di Holland (nel Massachusetts) ed è composto da Dick Hoyt (1 giugno 1940) e suo figlio Rick Hoyt (10 gennaio 1962). Insieme gareggiano in varie discipline sportive quali il triathlon e la maratona. Rick soffre di paralisi cerebrale infantile e per questo, durante le competizioni, Dick lo trascina adagiato in un canotto nelle gare di nuoto, lo trasporta su una bicicletta con una apposita seduta anteriore nelle sessioni di ciclismo e lo spinge su una sedia a rotelle sportiva nelle gare di corsa. Il Team Hoyt è stato inserito nella Hall of Fame dell'Ironman nel 2008.Rick, al momento della nascita, è rimasto colpito da paralisi cerebrale infantile dopo che il suo cordone ombelicale gli si è avvolto al collo procurandogli un'asfissia cerebrale con conseguenti danni cerebrali. I medici comunicarono ai genitori che probabilmente il figlio avrebbe condotto una vita in stato vegetativo. Essi però, notando che Rick li seguiva con gli occhi per tutta la stanza, non persero la speranza e accompagnarono Rick ogni settimana al Children's Hospital di Boston dove incontrarono un medico che li incoraggiò a trattare Rick come un qualsiasi altro bambino. La madre di Rick, Judy, trascorse diverse ore al giorno per insegnare l'alfabeto al figlio attraverso un particolare metodo. In un breve lasso di tempo Rick imparò l'alfabeto.Nel 1972, all'età di 11 anni, Rick venne dotato di un computer interattivo sviluppato dagli ingegneri della Tufts University e costato 5 000 dollari. Questo dispositivo permise di comunicare impartendo le istruzioni con i movimenti della testa. La prima frase che disse con questo dispositivo fu Go Bruins! (Forza Bruins!) riferita alla squadra di hockey su ghiaccio NHL di Boston. Nel 1977 Dick, che non ha mai corso in vita sua, inizia ad allenarsi con sacchi di pietre sulle spalle e poco dopo si forma il Team Hoyt che ancora oggi gareggia in tutto il mondo. Insieme hanno completato più di 1000 competizioni sportive tra cui maratone, triathlon (6 dei quali sono competizioni Ironman) e duathlon. Inoltre, nel 1992, attraversarono gli Stati Uniti d'America in 45 giorni, completando un totale 3735 miglia tra bicicletta e corsa.La maratona di Boston ha da sempre rappresentato per Dick la migliore competizione e la più simbolica, tant'è che nel 2009 è stata proprio quest'ultima a segnare la millesima corsa del Team Hoyt. Il sogno Dick Hoyt era spingere Rick nella maratona di Boston all'età di 70 anni, coronato nel 2011.

Rick hascerebral palsy and during competition Dick pulls Rick in a special boat as they swim, carries him in a special seat in the front of a bicycle, and pushes him in a special wheelchair as they run. Team Hoyt was inducted to the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2008.Rick Hoyt was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth after his umbilical cord became twisted around his neck, which caused the blockage of oxygen flow.As a result, his brain cannot send the correct messages to his muscles. Many doctors encouraged the Hoyts to institutionalize Rick, informing them that he would be nothing more than a "vegetable." His parents held on to the fact that Rick’s eyes would follow them around the room, giving them hope that he would somehow be able to communicate someday. The Hoyts took Rick every week to Children’s Hospital in Boston, where they met a doctor who encouraged the Hoyts to treat Rick like any other child. Rick's mother Judy spent hours each day teaching Rick the alphabet with sandpaper letters and posting signs on every object in the house. In a short amount of time, Rick learned the alphabet.At the age of 11, after some persistence from his parents, Rick was fitted with a computer that enabled him to communicate and it became clear that Rick was intelligent] With this communication device, Rick was also able to attend public school for the first time.Rick went on to graduate from Boston University in 1993 with a degree in special education and later worked at Boston College in a computer lab helping to develop systems to aid in communication and other tasks for people with disabilities.Team Hoyt began in 1977 when Rick became inspired by an article on racing he saw in a magazine. Dick Hoyt was not a runner and was nearly 37 years old. After their first race Rick said, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” After their initial five mile run, Dick began running every day with a bag of cement in the wheelchair because Rick was at school and studying, unable to train with him.” Dick was able to improve his fitness so much that even with pushing his son, he was able to obtain a personal record of a 5k in 17 minutes.As of November 2011, the Hoyts had competed in 1069 endurance events, including 69 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. They had run the Boston Marathon 29 times. Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days.They also compete in triathlons with Rick sitting in a boat for the swim portion, Dick pulls him in a boat with a rope attached to his body. For the cycle portion of the triathlon, Rick rides on the front of a specially designed tandem bike.Then he pushes Rick for the run.Rick turned 50 in 2012 and Dick will be 72. As they speak and travel more they are racing less. At the beginning of their career, they participated in 50 races per year but now aim for 20-25 races per year. They still say they don't see an end in sight yet.
