Kenenisa Bekele Beyecha (Bekoji, 13 giugno 1982)atleta etiope, campione olimpico e mondiale sui 5000 e 10000 metri, nonché attuale detentore dei record mondiali e olimpici su entrambe le distanze.Dal 2002 al 2008 ha vinto undici titoli mondiali nella corsa campestre.Kenenisa Bekele proviene dallo stesso villaggio di Derartu Tulu (la prima africana nera a diventare campionessa olimpica nel 1992 a Barcellona). Inoltre suo fratello minore Tariku Bekele ha iniziato a dedicarsi come lui all'atletica leggera. Si mise in luce ancora da under 18 e juniores vincendo due medaglie d'argento sui 3.000 m nel 1999 ai Mondiali allievi e sui 5000 m nel 2000 ai Mondiali juniores.Nel 2001 ai Campionati mondiali di cross country arrivò secondo nella gara corta seniores, e il giorno dopo si impose nella competizione juniores con un distacco di 33 secondi sul secondo classificato. Non riuscì invece a qualificarsi per i mondiali di atletica: al Golden Gala di Roma, prova scelta per selezionare i tre etiopi da iscrivere ai 5.000 m iridati, Bekele fu colpito da crampi e concluse al 16º posto, quarto degli etiopi.

Ai mondiali di corsa campestre del 2002 si impose sia nella gara breve sia nella gara lunga, primo uomo della storia a realizzare tale doppietta. Furono i primi di una lunga serie di titoli nella specialità del cross: fino al 2006 compreso, Bekele ha vinto entrambe le gare per cinque mondiali consecutivi. Un infortunio al tendine di Achille lo tenne lontano però dalle competizioni su pista nei mesi seguenti.Rientrato alle gare nel 2003, si cimentò per la prima volta sui 10.000 m, battendo il connazionale Haile Gebrselassie, pluri-campione olimpico e mondiale e primatista mondiale sulla distanza. Ai Campionati del mondo di atletica leggera 2003 a Parigi vinse la medaglia d'oro sui 10.000 m in un podio tutto etiope, con Gebrselassie argento e Sileshi Sihine bronzo; nei 5.000 m, vinti da Eliud Kipchoge, ottenne la medaglia di bronzo.Nel 2004 migliorò di oltre 2 secondi i record del mondo su entrambe le distanze, stabiliti dal connazionale Gebrselassie nel 1998. Il 31 maggio ad Hengelo Bekele corse i 5.000 m in 12'37"35, migliorando di 2"01 il precedente primato di 12'39"36. Una settimana dopo, l'8 giugno, al meeting di Ostrava fermò il cronometro a 26'20"31 sui 10.000 m, abbassando di 2"41 il vecchio limite di 26'22"73. Il 27 luglio fu nominato Ambasciatore dell'UNICEF. In agosto, alle Olimpiadi di Atene, il principale evento dell'anno, vinse la medaglia d'oro sui 10.000 m, mentre nei 5.000 m fu battuto da El Guerrouj ed ottenne la medaglia d'argento.Il 2005 cominciò per Bekele con un tragico lutto. Il 4 gennaio la sua fidanzata Alem Techale, campionessa del mondo under 18 sui 1500 m nel 2003, fu colpita da un attacco cardiaco mentre si allenavano assieme ad Addis Abeba, e morì mentre il compagno la trasportava in auto all'ospedale. Tornò alle gare poche settimane dopo, e a marzo vinse per la quarta volta consecutiva i mondiali di corsa campestre. Ai mondiali di Helsinki confermò il suo titolo sui 10.000 m battendo il connazionale Sihine e il keniota Moses Mosop. Il 26 agosto a Bruxelles ritoccò il suo primato mondiale sui 10.000 m scendendo a 26'17"53.Ai campionati del mondo indoor di Mosca nel 2006 vinse la sua prima medaglia d'oro al coperto sui 3.000 m, diventando così il primo atleta laureatosi campione del mondo all'aperto, al coperto e nella corsa campestre.Successivamente vinse altri 2 titoli mondiali sui 10.000 m, ovvero ad Osaka 2007 ed a Berlino 2009 dove realizzerà la doppietta vincendo anche la gara dei 5000.
Il 2010 per Bekele è stato un anno sabbatico e il suo manager ne ha annunciato il ritorno per l'estate 2011.
