E a loro mi ispiravo. Se oggi posso essere io l’esempio per qualcuno, non solo sono pronto a farlo: credo che sia un mio dovere. Perché in questi mesi in cui mi sono sottoposto a sette cicli di chemioterapia ho conosciuto persone di tutte le età, che affrontano il male con una nobiltà e una dignità incredibili, che aiutano anche gli altri a trovare la forza di combattere». Lo avevano avvisato, che sarebbe stata dura: «Mi hanno curato all’ospedale Santa Maria della Misericordia di Perugia, un luminare dell’ematologia, il professor Brunangelo Falini che è stato anche candidato al Nobel, e poi il dottor Falcinelli e la dottoressa Capponi. IL RESTO l’ha fatto la fibra anche morale dell’uomo e dell’atleta: «Sicuramente il fisico mi ha aiutato a sostenere le cure più pesanti, mi è stata utilissima anche la capacità appresa in palestra di accettare i miei limiti, ma senza arrendermi mai. Una mano grossa me l’ha data la fede, a Perugia dove vivo con mia moglie Alessia e mia figlia Carolina, che ha quattro anni, ho avuto tante dimostrazioni di affetto dalla comunità. Se sei da solo, rischi di cedere». Ora c’è un futuro da scrivere: «domenica ho visto la partita dopo aver avuto il permesso dei medici, prima le mie difese immunitarie erano troppo basse. Adesso ricomincerò piano piano a lavorare, ma prima mi faccio una settimana di vacanza con la famiglia. Se lo meritano, dopo troppi mesi brutti chiusi in casa».
